   If you have been pondering on becoming a professional photographer, getting a DSLR and starting to take photos might just be the way to discover if this is your passion. The first step to getting good photos is getting gear that will let you take good digital photos. Getting a good DSLR is easy; a Canon Rebel, a Nikon, or Pentax will work. Many new photographers worry that they do not have enough money for $500 lenses and lighting equipment. Well that might not be the case!

   As far as lenses go, a wide angle lens (and your default lens) is likely all you’ll need to create amazing photos through DSLR photography. A beauty dish is a good way to get great lighting, but natural lighting can do wonders as well.     The best way to get truly inspired-looking photos, is to write down a list of photographs that inspire you. The list can be anything from high fashion, to abandoned buildings, to photographs of a favorite painting, to nature and wildlife. Think about which subjects are most feasible (and ideally least expensive) for you to photograph while you’re practicing your DSLR photography. Nature, architectural, and floral subjects are best for real beginners. DSLR photography offers the luxury of being able to edit photos as well, so taking stock photography may make a lot of sense for photoshop practice.

Tips on DSLR Photography for Beginners.

   Begin your journey into DSLR photography by experimenting with how different lighting affects the look of the photograph. Try harsh light, soft light, dim light, and natural lighting. The same flower will look different in every single photo. Experiment with the focus by turning the dial in different directions. Some rotations will bring the foreground into focus, while others will bring the background into a sharper focus. Although most DSLR photographers will try to prove their ability to bring the entire subject into focus, it’s important to remember how different art styles can vary. Every different configuration has its merits!

   Working with models (or friends who want to model) will offer you the experience of learning how lighting can remove flaws from a person’s visage, and even will teach you social skills. Expect a lot of popularity when you begin photographing people instead of nature! Remember, no matter what subject you choose, with time, your DSLR photography skills will show its true beauty.

The idea of what good, quality photographs are can be extremely subjective… Your choice can be influenced by your mood, recent influences and other people’s comments. Never the less there are certain criteria that you need to select from.

Three criteria for digital photography, how to choose…

1. Sharp focus, clear detail and is your key focal point defined, such as the eyes, vanishing or point of interest. Even an ordinary common sight can be enjoyed in a photograph if its focus is clear and precise…

2. The framing of the shot. Normally an interesting photo is divided into 3 and your key area is found in either one or two thirds of the picture. This of course can vary and picture balance is also found through other dynamics such as a spiral stair case, leading lines or where your light source comes from.

3. What and how defined is your back ground? The effect of the back ground to your images plays equally in the appeal of your shot. Look to see if there’s anything in the back ground that could be distracting such as a lamp pole sticking out of a person’s head? Do the back ground colours suit the image? Is there an interesting pattern, lines or hue that adds to the photograph?

If you like it, the chances are that others will too. Don’t be afraid to show a little bit of your personality in what you like…

You may be able to please some people some of the time, but you can’t please everyone all the time.

The beauty to digital photography is the ability to edit out any defects that are annoying if you so wish. Some people do not like any picture editing and feel that a good photograph should not need to be edited. I think that is a little extreme and slight cropping should be tolerated to improve the look or balance in a picture.
